I grew up in Dortmund – back when a 56k modem was still something special. My father printed out articles about composers at work and brought them home; “Klassik für Kids” cassettes played in the background. Soon, piano lessons became more important.
As the pianist of the Habanera Duo, together with cellist Mounir Mahmalat, I played in the remotest corners of North Rhine-Westphalia, but also at festivals in Europe and the USA; our album “Une pièce en forme de Habanera” came out in 2012. I graduated in piano with distinction, among other works with Liszt's Dante Sonata. And then my life's dream came true: to play with an orchestra just once – Saint-Saëns, Piano Concerto in G minor.
After that I changed course. While studying at TU Dortmund I chose music journalism. After years in Berlin and my first programmes for Deutschlandradio Kultur, I am back in North Rhine-Westphalia and today present WDR 3 Tonart, WDR 3 Konzert and ARD Konzert – around 2,000 hours live on air so far.
As author and director I have made twelve documentaries for ARTE – about Vladimir Horowitz, Martha Argerich, Olivier Messiaen, Richard Strauss and many others. My cinema film “Hans Werner Henze. Composer, Communist, Dandy” was released in 2026. And I teach at universities and music colleges.
